Photo geolocation (GPS) means attaching the geographic coordinates โ latitude and longitude โ of where a photo was taken to the image file, as metadata. These coordinates come from the device's GNSS/GPS receiver. The process is also called geotagging. The coordinates are not visible on the image itself: they sit inside the file.
How are GPS coordinates attached to a photo?
When the photo is taken, if location is enabled, the device writes the coordinates into the file's metadata. The most common format is EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format), used mainly by JPEG files. Coordinates are stored as latitude/longitude โ often in degrees, minutes, seconds โ with a hemisphere reference (N/S) and a direction (E/W). They can come with an altitude and a timestamp. Without location permission, no coordinates are written.

What is photo geolocation used for?
It ties a piece of visual evidence to a specific place. That helps document a report, a field intervention, or a condition survey โ in insurance and loss adjusting, on a construction site, in technical support, or for property managers. Two caveats matter. First, accuracy varies: from a few meters in open sky to tens of meters indoors or in dense urban areas, depending on the receiver and the signal. Second, EXIF metadata can be edited or removed with common tools, and many platforms strip it on upload. Reliability therefore depends on how the coordinates are captured and kept.
